Ones To Watch: Sun Club

Sun Club are, as the name would suggest, gleefully sunny: with their carefree vocals and twinkly earworm hooks, Sun Club are summer put into songs – with an added dash of madness.

Their debut LP Dongo Durango proves this madness, and just how much potential it gives them. Don’t be fooled by the nonsensical track titles – ‘Glob’, ‘Cheeba Swiftkick’ and ‘Puppy Gumgum’, to name a few – because there is definitely a method to this madness.

Sun Club are hypnotic; the vocals sound almost out of reach, but it’s grounded by the chirpy, indie vibes of the hooks. It’s not all fun and sun though: there’s a definite underlying sense of discomfort that comes with Sun Club, and the album. A welcome one, no doubt, but with opening track ‘Glob’ consisting of bizarre circus/fairground-esque sounds, it’s impossible to shake that odd, almost melancholic feeling that I’m sure everyone associates with the circus.

Underneath all the sunshine and madness, what you’ll certainly find with Sun Club is unwavering musical talent. It’s a solid album, and they’re no doubt a solid band (despite perhaps appearing slightly unhinged): get on it and use the sunshine in this album to shake your Winter blues.
