Ones To Watch: Velcro Hooks

Velcro Hooks‘ beginning is an odd one to say the least: Jenner Blank met Thom Mason in the back alley of a Guatemalan hostel, leading to a fortnight of jamming and bonding over music. After returning to home – Jenner to Canada and Thom to the UK – the two spent a year apart; that is before Jenner packed up and moved to Bristol, moved in with Thom and his flatmates (Dom and George) and the four swiftly became Velcro Hooks.

Having disappeared from the gig circuit for a year, the band are back to unleash their debut on the world. Strangely, it seems to hark back to that dirty back alley, but who knew that sound reminiscent of something so unappealing could be so, well, appealing? Velcro Hooks are just cool: the first single from their album ‘Severin Mind’ is fuzzy, raw and gripping. With their screeching guitars and manic drums, it’s nothing short of the best kind of garage-rock; the sign of a truly productive break. If we’ve learnt anything from Velcro Hooks it’s that the best things often come from the weirdest places and a musical bond is a pretty strong one.

‘Severin Mind’ is out 15 January 2016, via Howling Owl Records.
