Peace LIVE @ Shepherds Bush Empire 7.12.13

Considering some people had been queuing since 11am, it was surprisingly short when we arrived at London’s famous Shepherds Bush Empire at 7pm (the same could not be said for the cloakroom queue, however). As we made our way into the standing area, I noticed that the crowd was a mixture of all ages and everyone there looked different to the next, although they did have two things in common. Firstly they were all absolutely battered by the time the first support came on. Secondly, they all had the same passionate love for Peace.

The first support was Troumaca whose sound I would describe as ‘Tribal trance’, which is something that I may or may not have just made up, but it does sum them up perfectly. They got the crowd on their feet and had the coolest haircuts that I’ve ever seen which was an added bonus. They only did a 30 minute set but I sense big things for them in the near future.

The second support came in the form of Is Tropical who also performed for 30 minutes and had a very impressive light show to match. Is Tropical also have a trance-like element to their sound that sends the crowd mental. The highlights were ‘The Greeks’ and ‘Dancing Anymore’ which I liked before I saw them played live, but am now in love with. Very impressive indeed.

At 9:40pm, Peace graced the stage. They didn’t speak much but this made time for more music so there was no complaining from us. It’s always magical when a band are so good live that you forget about everything else and all that matters is what’s happening right there and then, and that is exactly what happened. The crowd seemed to form an unbreakable bond and instead of being crushed and squished against sweaty bodies, everyone seemed to move at the same time, making the whole experience comfortable and enjoyable as well as crazy. They played their well-known songs such as ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Wraith’ as well as new material and a full version of ‘1998’which sounded completely angelic. The encore was ‘California Daze’ and ‘Bloodshake’ and the biggest and craziest mosh pit came right at the end during the chorus of ‘Bloodshake’. When Harrison sang ‘YOU VIBE SO HARD’ everyone lost it. It was also cool to find Josh McClorely of The Strypes moshing throughout. The only disappointments were that they didn’t play their version of ‘Last Christmas’ and I wished that the set was longer as I could’ve listened to them all night , but you can’t win them all, can you.
