Pete MacLeod LIVE @ Nice ‘N’ Sleazy Glasgow 28.11.14

Fresh from his German tour supporting Midge Ure and on the back of the exciting news that he will be recording his second album with multi-million selling producer Youth, Pete MacLeod took to the stage for an intimate performance at Glasgow’s Nice ‘N’ Sleazy.

With Glasgow awash with quality artists playing across the city on ‘Black Friday’ my mates and I struggled to find a parking place in the town centre and this led to me missing the set opener ‘Let It Shine’ from Pete’s fantastic debut album Rolling Stone. Thankfully, I caught some of ‘Give A Little Love’ which remains one of my own personal favs.

In this stripped back acoustic performance, Pete is accompanied by his regular guitarist Andy and next up is ‘God Speed’. Lost And Found’ is the first song in the set not from Rolling Stone and having heard the song now on a good few occasions it is quickly becoming a new favourite of my own. Between songs, Pete takes time (as always) to engage with his fans and thank those in attendance for their continued support as he continues on his journey. ‘

With Andy alongside, Pete is sounding great with his live vocal impressing (as always). Being a bit of a Nirvana fan, Pete takes the opportunity to pay homage through a cover of ‘Dumb’ from the album In Utero that has been re-mastered and reissued to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

As the set progresses a number of non Rolling Stone tracks feature and once again a big highlight for me is ‘Without Love’. Tonight there is no Rab Allan joining Pete on stage but this does not matter one iota with the track once again sounding immense. ‘Crestfallen’ and ‘Hanging On’ follow and it is clear Pete has the makings of a cracking second album for producer Youth to work with.

The set is brought to a stirring finale with the haunting ‘Today I Went Swimming’ a song that in my opinion is up there with the very best of them. Wow! That is how you close-out an intimate set and speaking to numerous people at the end of the gig the re-occurring topic is the performance of ‘Today I Went Swimming’ with many declaring this song was worth the entry fee alone.

As always at a Pete MacLeod gig it was great to chat with like-minded people and it was great to meet the fans from Liverpool who made the journey north to support Pete. With new albums due from The Charlatans, Stereophonics , Paul Weller and Pete, 2015 is shaping up nicely and I continue to believe that Pete MacLeod is destined for big things.
