Phoneys And The Freaks LIVE @ The Black Heart, Camden

Tonight newly formed rock n roll club night ‘Lonely Hearts Club’ play host to a legend of the Brit pop scene. Somewhat overshadowed by the force of nature that is the Gallagher brothers Paul Arthurs, better known as Bonehead, was a true fan favourite during his stint as guitarist in Oasis from 1991 – 1999. After his stint in The Parlour Flames, Bonehead is once again back on the live circuit, with his new project alongside Alex Lipinski. Ladies and Gentlmen, I give you Phoneys and The Freaks

The usual faces are in toe with the expected Oasis fans young and old and plenty mod’d up like they’re extras in Quadrophonia. As soon as Bonehead arrives at the Camden boozer a small melee of photos and handshakes ensue. Lead singer of the band, Alex Lapinski, isn’t a newbie on the scene by any means. Having enjoyed some solo success and acknowledgement from various artists his progressive rise is definitely on the right track and will become a staple in this loved scene.

They take to the stage at around 10pm with everyone suitably well oiled. They whisk their way through an hour set of new material, with great intent you hardly have time to take in and assess. But once you do the assessment is good, Alex Lipinski’s voice is in great form with not a dud note in site and is brilliantly accompanied with the 3 piece backing band with bonehead to his left. Having heard very little from this band beforehand I was unsure of what to expect bit at no point was there the expected fag break downer song or time to get a quick pint in slow one. Every song worked brilliantly well in a well crafted and thought through set. For the final few Lipinski not only sang and played guitar but also took to his harmonica to give everyone a taster of his musical portfolio.

The set was made up of folk influenced rock n roll which had more people toe tapping than Michael Flatly’s river dance. The two of then worked brilliantly together and gave the crowd a taster of what might be. For anyone expecting the pace and attitude of Defintely Maybe or 1995 to come back look away now because yes Bonehead is involved but the comparisons, musically, stop there. Overall the club night and ‘Phoneys and Freaks’ was a great success, together they brought a lot of life back to an otherwise dreary Wednesday night in Camden.
