Marianne Dissard premieres the video for her radical and racy re-working of 50s classic ‘Come On, Let’s Go!’ exclusively on Gigslutz.  

Some readers may remember French-born Dissard reading from her widely lauded memoir ‘Not Me’  which tells of her escape from Tucson, Arizona – she’d visited to make a documentaryon Giant Sandand ended up making her home for two decades.   After collaborating with Calexico among others, the ‘queen of desert noir’ Is now resident in Ramsgate, Kent.  Having spent most of her career singing in French, she, together with English producer and multi-instrumentalist Raphael Mann (Sugarcane /Art Terry/Lunatraktors), has embarked on a series of English-language covers culled from a diverse songbook leading up to an album set for release in early summer 2021. 

The series was kicked off by a version of Phil Ochs’ ‘The Scorpion Departs But Never Returns’ inspired by the parallels she saw between the fate of sailors aboard the Covid-stricken USS Roosevelt and the USS Scorpion in 1968 that had spurred Ochs to write the original. 

‘Come On, Let’s Go!’ was originally recorded byrockpioneer Ritchie Valens,who perished at the age of 17 in the same plane crash as The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly.As Raphael says, ‘It’s a song about wanting to fuck someone…” while Marianne, with characteristic openness, adds: “. . . fuck someone during a pandemic.”Her version boldly embraces theteenage sex fantasythat undergirds much of 50s rock. 

The instantly recognisable saxophone style of the seemingly ubiquitous Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey / Gallon Drunk / The Higsons) adds to the sultry feel, while the song’s video, put together from vintage library footage by Mann, transfers the tremulous desire into wonderfully gaudy, ultra-vivid colour.
