Sian Cross has shared her video for her latest single ‘What Do I Learn’ exclusively first on Gigslutz. Scroll down to check it out.
In the video, Sian asks strangers on the streets of London what makes them special, and the answers vary from “cheeky smile” to “I have scoliosis and I won’t let it stop me”.
Sian explains how she came up with the concept: “the song’s story is of a man’s struggle with obesity but it always felt more than just clothes size. I took the line ‘you are truly one in a million’ and decided to turn it into a question. I wanted real people and real reactions. The results were beautiful.”
‘What Do You Learn’ is a BANKS/ Foxes/ Jessie Ware styled single that sonically represents Sian’s insight about how to be happy. For Sian, that means learning how to feel confident and comfortable in her own skin and overcoming health issues in her family. A shocking health diagnosis and subsequent recovery prompted her to find herself and create music that reflects her life experiences.
The song itself achieves an intricate duality between a light piano ballad and explosive electro pop. Sian’s voice floats above the music, asking us what we learn from our experiences. Good, bad, uplifting, demoralizing: we teach ourselves how to mentally and physically recover from traumatic events or relationships by asking, “What do you learn?”
