PREVIEW: Music against Homelessness brings two shows to Northampton

Oasis guru Alan McGee is teaming up with local bands in Northampton as part of his new campaign which has the twin aims of raising funds to help the homeless, and supporting up-coming artists.

The music mogul launched a new nationwide campaign called Musicians Against Homelessness earlier this year to raise funds for the homeless charity Crisis.

McGee said “I am delighted that  bands of this calibre want to be part of this campaign. Northampton is hosting two impressive, unique gigs with strong line-ups, we’re proud of the cities input. Roadmender and Barratts are great venues, it’s important in this day and age with live music venues being lost ,that people support their efforts to keep good live music accessible locally”

On 20th October the Roadmender plays host to The Samuel Rogers Band, Kav, Nick Aslam, The Repeat Offenders, Same Streets and Penny Mob.

Speaking of the gig Samuel Rogers says: Samuel Rogers’ Magnificent Dreams are performing at Musicians Against Homelessness because we feel Homelessness is a tragic thing to happen to somebody, and can be a really difficult cycle to get out of, which leaves them feeling that all is lost with no hope. If we can contribute towards Homeless charities like Crisis and help save even one homeless person’s life by getting them on the right track, it would make such a great difference to that one person, knowing that not all is lost and that there is hope. Hope is a massive thing that keeps us all going. We’re all for helping people get back on the right track, it’s got to be done!

Nick Aslam is one of the UK’s most original sounding singer songwriters. Hungry from the council estates and streets of Burton On Trent he continues his quest in the music industry with great support from the BBC & local radio stations across the nation. Nicks sound has grown through the acoustic roots of Country and Indie holds a maturity in his song writing which has been compared to the grit of Cash meeting the romance of Richard Hawley,

Nick says: “MAH … Why am I doing it? It’s simple, a years and a half ago I found myself in a homeless situation and music is what got me out of the shit, now I’m in a position where my music and others can help raise money for the people that are in the same situation”

Repeat Offenders are described as “The Stone Roses meet The Rolling Stones, with an Oasis attitude. It sounds like utter chaos but their sound is tinged with a Richard Ashcroft vibe to even things out.”   They are also looking forward to the gigs: “We’re proud to be taking part in MAH as it’s something we strongly believe in… I mean how the fuck in the 21st century can homelessness be on the rise in the UK whilst our beloved  Government spunk money left right & centre on all sorts of crap!”

Northampton’s Barratts venue will also be hosting what promises to be a cracking night on 24th September with sets from Ocean Colour Scene’s Andy Bennett, Longy, The Assist, Harry Pane, Amy Clare and Light After Midnight.

Andy Bennett says:  “It’s a great privilege to be asked to play these shows with my band. It’s unfortunate that so many people are becoming homeless and the problem seems to be escalating. MAH is a great opportunity to showcase talent while supporting a worthy cause. I’m looking forward to performing my 2 recently released singles ‘Hole in the road’ and ‘Drift Away and also a 3rd single ‘A little love’ which will be out in November just ahead of my debut album ‘Thinkin Drinkin Singin’ which is released on the 25th November. I’m looking forward to playing  Barratts with the exceptionally talented musicians in my band, Northampton you won’t be disappointed!”

Penrose are flying over especially from Dublin for the show and said: The main reason we are playing MAH gigs is because Homelessness is a global issue , we are a band from Dublin where it is an issue too. It’s a problem close to our hearts ,so we wanted to be involved and help support such a great cause. We can’t wait to make our Northampton debut

The Assist are a multi genre quartet from Walsall, formed in 2014. comprised of both brothers Mikey Stanton (vocals) and Ryan Stanton (guitar). Bassist Jak Baker and drummer Ben Faulkner.
With a sound so colourful and unpredictable, angular and edgy guitar riffs effortlessly intertwine between funky bass lines and punchy yet often disco tech like drums. littered with infectious melodies, unexpected tempo changes, and anthemic sing-along choruses the music takes you on a ride like no other.

Strongly supported by BBC’s introducing show and not long after being labelled as “Birmingham’s next big thing” by XFM , plans to release an E.P were put in place. High profile gigs and festivals came round so soon and the band still continue to scale the country prior to the big release date expected early next year. Having completed a full UK 2015 tour adding dates to a list of shows already consisting of gigs at Liam Gallagher’s very own ‘Pretty Green’ store and festival slots alongside the likes of ‘The 1975’ , ‘The Enemy’ and ‘Happy Mondays’. the Assist recently released their EP ‘Trouble’.
