Quick Q&A: Goldie Thorn

Formed in Australia, Goldie Thorn cite influences ranging from LCD Soundsystem to The Avalanches whilst creating their own brand of dreamy, electronically infused tunes. With a new EP out later this month – filled with chilled out, dancey vibes – we caught up with Goldie Thorn for a little chat…

Hello Goldie Thorn! Who are you and what do you do in the band?
We’re an electro duo our of London – The Rev plays bass, programs the sampler and mixes. Gold&Chain plays and programmes the drums.  Both of us take a spin doing vocals from time to time.

How did you guys meet?
We both met when we were playing in other bands and hit it off.

There’s a very ’90s sound to the EP – with a little ’80s thrown into the mix – what are your actual musical influences?
You’ll hear the influence of bands like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and St Etienne, as well as the obvious ones like Daft Punk and Cassius. I love a lot of the electro music being made by women at the moment – Robyn, Grimes, Lykke Li and others.

Does the EP Canal Life  have a general theme to it – if so, what is it?
Yes! We wrote the record with the overarching theme of life living on the doorstep of East London canal’s in mind.  Additionally, the title is a bit of a play on Grace Jones’ ‘Island Life’ record, which we both love.

There are quite a few strange and quirky samples – tell us what influenced this and what those are?
>We’ve always loved a clever use of sampling, and one of our favourite bands ever is The Avalanches, whose seminal release ‘Since I Left You’ was made entirely from samples.

What’s next after the EP release?
We’re working on a full length album, and developing new releases for our label, Dreamtime Records (http://www.dreamtimeforever.com)
