REVIEW: Young Gun Silver Fox – Canyons album review

The infectious warm sounds of Young Gun Silver Fox make an impressive return with their third long player Canyons released via Legere Recordings. Primarily featuring a heavy mix of 70’s rare groove, Hall and Oates, Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan influenced numbers, the set itself has a clear vision  to lift the down spirited with crisp, clean produced tunes all of which have an addictive sophisticated beat.

Kids starts off sounding like the distant cousin to Do It Again, some sumptuous playing by band mainstays Shawn Lee (Library Music Film) and Andy Platts (Mamas Gun), Platts vocals are as good as anything the aforementioned stellar acts. Who Needs Worlds continues to turn on the good vibes, with some cute multi layered harmonies plus a snappy horn section bring an edge of sunshine soul to the proceedings.

Dream Woman has that traditional 70’s slap bass funk feel that was conquered by so many of the period yet YGSF bring the delicious sound triumphantly back just like Bootsy Collins has just walked in on the session. There some smoother, soulful tracks including Long Distance Love which has an imaginative smoke machine attached to it as it brings an element of steamy romance to the record. The overall verdict of the album is it is as good as any multi-instrumentalist conceived album that you will ever find, a gorgeous release clearly touched by the hand of nostalgia without sounding dated.
