Robbie Boyd LIVE @ Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, London 10.12.14

Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen played host, on a cold December night, to the Robbie Boyd final show of 2014. Following an epic year the folk singer-songwriter is due to release new single ‘Brave’on the 25 January 2015 through Tawny Owl Records.

Robbie Boyd takes the stage to an eager audience and opens with ‘I Won’t Let You Go’. The soft melody has the crowd humming along and nodding their heads. ‘Less Than Friends’ is up next and gets people dancing to this bitter-sweet but upbeat, sounding track. “We love you Robbie” shouts an audience member. The song ends to loud applause.
The band perform new single ‘Brave’, an easy listening, feel good track that warms up the audience with its positive and catchy lyrics.

‘Spring Generation’ was requested ahead of the show and garners high enthusiasm from the crowd. Robbie Boyd perform ‘Orions Belt’ next, the first song on the debut album, which gets everyone grooving along to the catchy melody. ‘Orions Belt’ is the newest song, written just before the debut album was recorded and will be released soon.

The rest of the band leave Robbie on stage solo to perform ‘Never, Never Land’ last track on the debut album. The audience are transfixed and sing aloud appreciatively. The steady, rhythmic guitar playing shines on this track. Adam Fletcher, Keyboards & Vocals, comes back on stage to perform another request with Robbie, ‘Unlock The Key’. The audience sway along to the soft melody in this song.

‘Colours In Your Eyes’ is performed followed by’ Under My Skin’, for which Robbie “stole” the melody for the song after hearing a bird singing in his garden. Robbie delivers a heartfelt and passionate performance evincing pure enjoyment as he starts dancing on stage. The band performs another request ‘Amsterdam’, one of the first songs they wrote. The bluesy feel of rainy afternoon envelopes the crowd and everyone starts cheering and singing along with Robbie.

‘Taste Life’ is performed, “a new but old track” which will be on the new single next year and is already being recorded, Robbie informs the audience excitedly. As the band harmonise the audience start tapping their feet and clapping along. “Do you like this one” asks Robbie to which the audience replies with a resounding “yeah”. ‘Red Queen’, track 10 on So Called Man, is a romantic track which elicits raucous cheering from the crowd.

Robbie Boyd end an intimate and fun night with their encore performance of ‘Angel’.
