Snoop Dogg LIVE @ Boardmasters Festival, Newquay 09.08.14

Rating:

Seeing Snoop Dogg live was a bit of a surreal experience, but it definitely happened and he didn’t disappoint that much. Arriving on stage almost half an hour late when hurricane Bertha was picking up didn’t go down too well with the crowd but he made up for that almost instantaneously. I wasn’t too sure what to expect from a Snoop Dogg set but he included a bit of everything in there – his own songs, songs that he featured in and songs that weren’t his at all.

The surreal part of seeing Snoop Dogg live was in the more than slightly crude animations on the big screen, the appearance of someone in a bear costume that was swinging around an incredibly large, green penis around, when Snoop lit a joint onstage and when “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” made an unexpected appearance on the set-list. There were fairly poignant moments when he made tributes to old friend and collaborator Tupac Shakur and old rival Biggie Smalls but the nice touch was swept away almost immediately when an animation of a half naked girl twerking appeared on the screen straight after…there was nothing wrong with his performance though, he managed to get the crowd going for more than an hour and he managed to rap through songs that are 20 years old without any problem.

Cringey moments were fairly frequent when you realised that this is a 42 year old man, married with kids singing about wanting to “get you wet” amongst other things but I suppose that’s all part of the Snoop Dogg image and is only to be expected. Overall it was a fun hour filled with memorable songs from yesteryear and the Boardmasters crowd seemed to love it.
