New Track: HOO HAs – ‘This Is The New Me’

With their second single ‘This Is The New Me’, HOO HAs take us on a journey of self betterment, whilst simultaneously reminding us again about those New Year’s resolutions we so swiftly forgot.

Making his start writing poetry, before working alongside the late Rob Skipper, frontman Jamie met Mark and Adam when they were in a band called Hares. Jamming at parties progressed to sessions above Finsbury Park’s Silver Bullet, which further progressed to late night gigs downstairs and so began the journey to HOO HAs.

Jamie’s songwriting experience, and the band’s collective experience in whole, certainly manifest themselves in ‘This Is The New Me’ and its nonchalant groove.

Taken from their upcoming self-titled debut EP, ‘This Is The New Me’ sees frontman Jamie boast: “I didn’t eat bacon for breakfast / I haven’t smoked all day / I didn’t get drunk at lunch time…” Small steps, perhaps, but it would be wrong to suggest I was doing any better in my quest for change.

What’s perhaps best about HOO HAs’ unique brand of Britpop is not only their brutal honesty, but the ability to pull it off without sounding pretentious and/or cynical. Rather, they pull it off with overtones of dark humour, something far more refreshing.

Already gaining plays on Radio X courtesy of John Kennedy, ‘This Is The New Me’ could be the motivation we all need to sort our lives out. Or just a great track. Either way, it’s pretty good.
