TRACK REVIEW: Scary People – ‘Black Eyes’

Scary People are the latest in a classic rock comeback from the UK. Straight out of Dundee, the band formed last year within the space of a week to form a support band to play a sold out show. Quite a lot of pressure then… But they’ve pushed on to show their ultimate potential. With a lot more than a week’s practice under their belts, the band have now released their second EP, Chicago!, which has propelled them to greater heights gaining recognition from BBC Introducing and landing some killer festival slots including Wickerman and T in the Park.

Their latest single, ‘Black Eyes’, is a roaring racer of a track – heavy and uncontrollable, as though the combined power of thunder and lightning are spinning through your eardrums. A weighty guitar and drums led song is a strong move compared to their previous single ‘Guided By The Blind’, which is more Fountains of Wayne than Foo Fighters. The tight and precise drumming patterns are exquisite and give the whole song a sense of organised chaos underneath the vocals and guitar. Daniel Forouhar’s vocals sound far superior to their previous releases, the power and control over his mighty voice is impeccable. Forouhar uses a far more dynamic range and shows his true vocal ability, including a haunting sudden stop to whisper the title ‘Black Eyes’. If this track is a fair representation of what’s to come, then Scary People are certainly ones to watch.

‘Black Eyes’ is out now, via RedRoom Recordings.
