Track Review: The Traps

The curious genre of Alt. Pop has recently boasted some of the hottest female talent of the age; Lana Del Rey, Cat Power and Sky Ferreira to name just a few.  However, one of the male bands to fit this bill, with their colossal sound, are The Traps.

The Traps are a DIY four piece, who could potentially be the next rising stars to emerge from Birmingham.  With their obscure tanginess pulsing from the idiosyncratic vocals of lead singer Jamie Berry, The Traps are individual in every way possible.  This originality is defined on new non-physical AA-side single ‘Imposter’, which is also coupled with A-side ‘My Grip’.

The ‘A-side’ track ‘My Grip’ has been taken from The Traps’ debut album ‘Calypso’, which was released in September 2013.  Easily one of the highlights on the album, ‘My Grip’ transports the listener to another world, through the use of heavy synthetics and a vibrant vocal range depicting every possible mood under the sun.

However, on ‘AA-side’ of the track, ‘Imposter’, we see a more controversial and complicated side to the band.  Compared to ‘My Grip’, this brand new song presents a more menacing and sinister sound, creating something so spectacular that it brings something completely new to The Traps’ table of tricks.   The dark, brooding sound of this track pours though the dominant bass; creating a subtle, yet effective tingling on the back of the listener’s neck.  Throw in the eerie plucky guitar and you have a recipe for a single that is about to bloom into the mainstream.

Forget me soon” croons Berry before the captivating song slowly fades out, making you bound instantly for the replay button.  This exceptional track is something to celebrate.  However, no matter how hard you try to comply with Berry’s last words, it’s almost physically impossible to do so.

The set release date to get your hands on ‘My Grip’ / ‘Imposter’ is March 17th.  But, if you can’t wait, ‘Imposter’ is available to listen to on their Youtube page right now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1xi1HyMZx4

If you’re not convinced by the dark waves of power that ripple through these tracks, you can also go see The Traps in action on March 14th,  when they’re set to play the Lexington.  The Traps are something you shouldn’t be turning away from – they are the future of Alt. Pop.
