Tracks Of The Week, 05.08.15

Following her impressive debut EP, singer-songwriter Sonia Stein has lately been writing and producing her first full album along with the esteemed Liam Howe (FKA Twigs, Jessie Ware etc).

Stein’s latest track, ‘Demented Mind’, is a soulfully haunting offering, showcasing her impressive vocal range alongside delicate melodies and eerie undertones.

Listening to the track, it’s impossible not be swept away by its majesty, and get lost among the grand sounds created…

Sounds that, as it turns out, are all solely created by Stein’s own body and voice, and nothing else. No band, no instruments, no backing choir; just Stein. And, upon listening to the track as a whole, this is a pretty impressive feat. Unbelievable even. A gripping, stunning work of art that should not pass your ears by.

‘Demented Mind’ is out 14 August.

Having just released his debut EP, White Ink, John J Presley has been pretty busy recently – being Duke Garwood’s guitarist on the road and supporting the likes of the Jim Jones Revue and Kill It Kid.

The EP’s lead single, ‘Come Calling’, is raucous blues-rock anthem, with shades of the likes of Nick Cave. As Presley’s raw, husky vocals blast out alongside frenzied riffs, it’s impossible not to get sucked into the track’s dark, sinister energy. It would be perfect for the next season of True Detective…

White Ink is out now via Vital Music, and will be available on limited edition vinyl from 31 August.

The first single to come from Sacre Noir’s forthcoming third LP is a wonderfully haunting slice of bluesy electronica.

Accompanied by an appropriately creepy video (directed by Stephen Young), ‘Listen To Me’ fuses together rock, electro and blues-inspired instrumentation to create an intense, cinematic ballad, somewhat reminiscent of The Dead Weather.

As powerful, angst-laden vocals flow alongside climactic riffs and echoing reverb, ‘Listen To Me’ offers a glimpse into the wonderfully disturbed world of Sacre Noir.

One of my favourite pastimes is listening to 6Music, especially when offered the chance to discover some exciting, new music. An example of this happened the other evening – listening to Steve Lamacq, suddenly a welcome wave of sound hit my ears and instantly left me craving more.

I soon discovered that said sound had been Glasgow trio, Dead Hope, with their new track ‘Truth Be Told’. I haven’t been able to find out much about the band, but all that you need to know is that it’s definitely worth a listen.

Filled with catchy melodies interwoven with gruff, languid, punk-infused vocals, ‘Truth Be Told’ hits you with a welcome blast of energy on these drizzly ‘summer’ days… Despite the band’s apathetic choice of name, they do in fact fill me with hope.
