Tracks Of The Week, 07.04.14

Currently in the process of recording a debut album with Jim Spencer (Johnny Marr, New Order, The Charlatans), The Tapestry have already been receiving acclaim from the likes of Liam Gallagher – not bad for band who haven’t yet released a record.

Hailing from Manchester, Liam Faherty, Katy Baker, Dyna and Zara Finnegan create unmistakably unique, addictively catchy indie pop anthems, and have been making a name for themselves with their impelling live performances. With slots supporting Pete Doherty, The View and The Strypes under their belt, The Tapestry are now set to release their new single.

‘Right As Rain’ is a funky fusion between the anthemic indie vibe of the likes of Kasabian with Franz Ferdinand-esque, uptempo, foot-tapping beats. With crunching guitars, thrashing drums, impossibly catchy melodies and heartfelt harmonies, it is indeed – as Mr Gallagher said – a ‘Fucking Tune!’. A deliciously delightful dose of British indie-pop at its best.

‘Right As Rain’ is released on April 14th 2014:

But, if watching the video isn’t enough, you can catch The Tapestry live this week:
11th April – Ruby Lounge, Manchester
12th April – Queen Of Hoxton, London (This Feeling)

Having got together in a small, Alberta town back in 2010, Fist City have just made their first trip to the UK – leaving a wave of raucous excitement behind them. About to reissue their 2012 album, ‘It’s 1983, Grow Up’, bonus track ‘Let’s Rip’ is a perfect testament to the band’s scuzzy blasts of pop-punk.

Accompanied by an awesome home-made video – “done on a zero dollar budget… and with the radness of a pack of weirdo pals” –  ‘Let’s Rip’ furiously fuses together raucous rock ‘n’ roll, pulsating punk beats and catchy pop melodies, thus creating a fist-clenching, head banging storm of a song.

‘It’s 1983, Grow Up’ will be reissued by Trangressive Records on 19th May,  and you can pre-order it from iTunes georiot.co/FistCityiTunes , on cassette http://tinyurl.com/FistCityK7 or on vinyl http://tinyurl.com/FistCity12. Whichever medium you choose, you’re in for a treat!

Having grown up in a household filled with traditional Irish folk and ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll, Sophie Jamieson began creating her own music from a young age. Her latest single ‘Stain’ sees these raw folk influences shining through, but with a contemporary layer of ethereal ambience – thus creating a truly beautiful and undeniably haunting taste of what Jamieson is capable of.

‘Stain’ showcases Jamieson’s inspiration from the early sounds of Laura Marling as well as the musical depth of (another of my faves…) Sharon Van Etten, but remains utterly unique in its entirety. Whilst somewhat simple in musicality, this track subtly captivates the listener with its lyrical intensity and enchanting aura; and, with a voice as smooth and full of depth as Jamieson’s, ‘Stain’ offers a profoundly wonderful journey into the unknown.

Half of a double A-side, ‘Stain’ is released alongside ‘Other’  on 19th May through LuvLuvLuv, and is co-produced by Sophie and Ben Walker.

And you can catch one of Sophie’s enchantingly intimate live shows over the next few weeks:

10th April – The Old Queen’s Head, London

9th April – Sebright Arms, London  *Solo show* (w/ Rhodes)

6th May – Slaughtered Lamb, London *Solo show* (w/ Wilsen)

15th May – The Finsbury, London

18th May – The Louisiana, Bristol

If the events of the weekend have left you hankering for the time when Grunge was fresh, blasting out of cassette players with angst-laden power, then look no further: Jon Jefford’s (formerly of DeepSeaGreen) latest project, The Lunar Effect, is set to take you back to those days.

Having released their debut EP  last month, to coincide with a full moon, new single – ‘Getting To Grips With You’ – gives us a glimpse into what to expect from the record. Filled with Jefford’s gravelly drawl, impressive riffs, raw melodies and a vast dynamic range, here we are presented with a perfect balance between a classic, grunge-inspired track, with a distinctly British edge and psychedelic undertones. A necessary accompaniment for getting through these dreary April days.

Recorded using a traditional production style, the self titled, five track EP from The Lunar Effect is an effective amalgamation of riotous rock with more mellow moments, and is available via iTunes or to download from www.3ravensrecords.com or www.3ravensrecords.bandcamp.com.
