Tracks Of The Week, 09.04.15

Toronto-born, California-based singer-songwriter, Lila Rose, is a pretty unique talent to say the least. Born with a form of hyperacusis – a sensitivity that makes some natural sounds unbearable – she manages to create wonderfully original, beautifully intense music.

Taken from her new album, WE.ANIMALS, ‘World On Fire’ perfectly showcases Rose’s two main passions in life: music and the environment. Accompanied by a thought provoking video conveying Rose’s vision of a unified existence between all earth’s creatures, here is a hallucinatory track offering tribal beats, ethereal harmonies and distinctive Bjork-esque vocals. An utterly bewitching, cinematic creation that will leave you deep in reflection.

WE.ANIMALS is out 14 April.

Full of frantic beats, hazy psych melodies and catchy refrains, the new one from Nai Harvest – ‘All The Time’ – would appear to be the perfect pop-punk anthem.

Hailing from Sheffield, Nai Harvest prove that the mighty Drenge aren’t the only duo in the city capable of making a wonderful cacophony with all the upbeat, reckless abandon of youth that you could ever want.

Having been relentlessly touring since last year – including packed shows at Tramlines and Bestival – Nai Harvest release Hairball, their upcoming album, on April 27. I can’t wait to treat my ears to more of this joyous, pop-punk goodness.

With their sunny geek-pop vibes, you could be forgiven for thinking that The School must hail from the sun-drenched shores of California… They are, in fact, based in Cardiff.

Regardless of where they live, however, The School’s cheery brand of pop is pretty lovely. New track, ‘All I Want From You Is Everything’, exudes shades of Best Coast or current favourites, Alvvays, as lilting harmonies flow alongside uptempo beats and youthful, lovelorn lyrics.

‘All I Want From You Is Everything’ is out next Monday, 13 April, with The School’s upcoming album – Wasting Away And Wondering – set for release in July.

Despite having been making lovely music for a good few years now, I’m ashamed to say that This Is The Kit (aka Kate Stables) only came to my attention a couple of weeks back upon hearing new track ‘Bashed Out’ on Lauren Laverne’s 6Music show.

As Stables’ alluringly smooth vocals flow alongside delicate folky melodies, ‘Bashed Out’ sweeps over you with a warmth comparable to these balmy Spring days we’ve been having. For this reason, ‘Bashed Out’ seems a rather oxymoronic title – ‘flows out’ may be more appropriate, as melodies trickle effortlessly and cast you under their sunny, dreamy haze.

A beautiful, timeless creation that has fast become my song of the Spring.

Bashed Out, the album, is out now via Brassland.

Mr Salewicz and co. have done it again. After a recent run of fantastic live shows (including the This Feeling night at The Macbeth), Gigslutz favourites, The Savage Nomads, are back with another fantastically uptempo track, complete with a brand-spanking-new video.

‘Rosy Tan’ is another infinitely catchy, energy rich offering from the South London band, soaked in alluring grooves and funk-infused melodies, that will have you on your feet in no time. Filled with upbeat, jangly guitar riffs and Salewicz’s enthralling deep drawl, here is yet more proof that this hard working, charisma-rich band are set for stardom.

‘Rosy Tan’ is out 18 May on Boogawooga Records, buy it here. And make sure you tune in to the Gigslutz Girls’ New Music Show next Thursday, 7-9pm, for a special acoustic session with the band!

Upcoming live dates:

11 April – This Feeling, Brighton

17 April – Mr Wolfs, Bristol

18 April – Lennon’s, Southampton

20 April – Old Blue Last, London

5 June – The Garage w/ Deaf School, London
