Gigslutz Tracks Of The Week 22.11.13

Although Jake Evans has only just released his debut single, he is no newcomer to the music scene. Having first gained attention with his band Rambo & Leroy, he then went on to co-front and play guitar for Bad Lieutenant alongside Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris of New Order/Joy Division, and Blur’s Alex James. As a solo artist, he has opened for the likes of Paul Weller as well as Johnny Marr and New Order at their prestigious Jodrell Bank concert back in July. He has a wealth of experience under his belt that has evidently served him well.

‘Easy On My Soul’, released last week ahead of his debut solo album ‘Day One’ that should hit our ears in Spring next year, sees Evans capable of creating a melodic indie-rock ballad. Filled with atmospheric, synthy echoes, bluesy harmonica, brit-poppy riffs and even a gospel choir, Evans’ debut single is an exciting creation showcasing this Macclesfield based singer-songwriter’s many talents. With shades of Blur’s ‘Tender’ along with rather Ashcroft-esque vocals, ‘Easy On My Soul’ builds up to a surprising climax which amalgamates the song’s many ingredients to create something quite delicious. Whilst nostalgic in its nods towards the indie scene of the ‘90s, Evans’ ability to combine heartfelt lyrical storytelling with such climatic, euphoric melodies and uptempo indie-rock beats strikes me as quite unique. Going it alone thus seems to suit Evans down to the ground- he is clearly in his element, and Spring can’t come soon enough.

‘Easy On My Soul’ was released on Vita Records on 18th November, with ‘Day One’ following in Spring 2014.

For a taste of melodic folky goodness, Cattle and Cane are just the ticket. Hailing from Teeside, the Hammill siblings fuse together emotive harmonies and blues-inspired riffs, thus creating tender, timeless tunes. Latest single ‘Pull Down The Moon’ is a gentle ballad with twinkly, picked guitar lines that builds with crescendo and thumping drums as they ‘bring it down for ya’ into an anthemic blast of traditional folk. As Joe and Helen’s voices compliment each other perfectly, soaring piano melodies float over them, resulting in a charming folk song, tinged with romanticism and emotion that will touch even the coldest of hearts.

‘Pull Down The Moon’ limited edition CD is released 25th November on Toasty Records.

Fitting nicely into the current niche of synth-pop, Say Yes Dog are to release debut EP ‘A Friend’ next month. Currently based in The Netherlands, this electro-pop trio were founded a couple of years ago by two Germans and another dude from Luxembourg. The EP’s lead single ‘ Around My Neck’ combines textured synth melodies, intense resounding chords and layered vocals reminiscent of Australian popsters Tame Impala. With an uptempo incessant beat, ‘Around My Neck’ is an undeniably dancey track, yet retains an endearing, emotive warmth and a bluesy edge that means it stands out from the crowd.

You can currently download ‘Around My Neck’ for free from the band’s Soundcloud, or wait until 9th December for EP ‘A Friend’ to be released. You can also catch Say Yes Dog live in the UK:

18th December: Oakford Social Club, Reading
19th December: Hoxton Square Bar And Kitchen

Canadian born, Nashville-based, Lindi Ortega is a traditional country singer with a difference. The title track of new album, ‘Tin Star’, is a vivacious yet heartfelt country ballad. With a Norah Jonesy feel, Ortega’s delicately soulful vocals sit alongside stomping guitars and upbeat, honky-tonk piano melodies. Exuding a fragility juxtaposed with an acerbic, subtle strength, ‘Tin Star’ is a refreshing take on country that will soon have you tapping your feet and singing along.
