Two Door Cinema Club LIVE @ London 02 13.12.13

On Friday 13th December 2012, Two Door Cinema Club played their biggest show to date. I felt like a proud mother to watch them evolve from touring with the NME Awards around local venues, to the breath taking 20,000 capacity London O2 arena.

Swim Deep were the first of the support acts on stage. I have to admit, I felt a bit sorry for them, giving their all only to be stared back at by a ghostly crowd of relatively unresponsive teenagers trying too hard to be ‘hipster’. Nevertheless, I was impressed with their live performance.

Swim Deep were followed by the extravagant Crystal Fighters. I, and assumedly the majority of the crowd, only knew their greatest hit ‘You and I’, so I was sceptical about their set. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Their trippy music combined with an impressive light show resulted in a sense of unrealism and awe. As my friend said; “I don’t know about Crystal Fighters, but they’re on crystal something…”

Two Door’s stage arrival was cheered to by thousands of dazed fans, creating a massive sense of unity amongst strangers who all have one thing in common; their love of TDCC. Opening their set with their first single from their current album, ‘Sleep Alone’ they certainly didn’t disappoint. What came next surprised me, as they launched straight into the highly energetic ‘Undercover Martyn’. Personally, I think it was too early in their set, as the crowd were not fully lost in the music yet, however, that didn’t prevent several mosh pits forming on the dance floor.

They followed with a welcome infusion of songs from both albums, as well as the crowd pleasing new single ‘Changing of the Seasons’ before a tremendous echoing raw of applause as Alex Trimble announces they’re working on a new album to 1000’s of grinning faces.

Tenth in their set list was ‘Pyramid’, accompanied by a stunning laser pyramid which portrayed Alex to seem like some kind of indie God. It was the first time that the band had played their more subdued track ‘The world Is Watching’ live, with Valentina whilst ‘With your hand in mine we will run, to a place that knows no-one’ almost brought me to tears. The charismatic, hypnotic melody was heavenly.

Two Door brought back memories of Summer 2012 with their all familiar catchy tune ‘Something Good Can Work’, which made everyone stand up and dance. The set ended with ‘Eat That Up, It’s Good For You’, with every lyric sang back at them before they remerged for an encore Door of ‘Someday’, ‘Cigarettes In The Theatre’, and ‘What You Know’.

Overall, although due to the intimacy of the show lacking due to the size of the venue, this was an exceedingly mesmerizing show.
