Unsigned Act Of The Week: Your Correspondent

Exuding lyrically poetic, heart-rending tales of beauty, Your Correspondent (aka Andrew D. Smith), hails from the bright lights of Bedford but has recently travelled far and wide with crooning folkster, Christof, supporting The Staves on their tour. Having also recently recorded his debut EP at Bowerman Studios in Fulham, and with an eight date tour of Germany coming up, it seems that the future is looking bright for Your Correspondent.

And rightly so. This debut EP sounds like so much more than a band’s first offering, it sounds like the work of someone oozing experience, and speaks with the voice of someone wise beyond their years.

Whilst opening track, ‘Watching The Storm’, is a rousing offering showcasing Smith’s skill for creating stunning arrangements and stirring nautical imagery, in ‘Sit Tight’ we see a more insightful, romantic side to this talented troubadour – ‘You will sit tight until I hear your name for the last time’. The last track of the EP is my personal highlight – actually inspired by violinist, Sophie Rowell’s instrument – ‘Violin Trees’ is a truly beautiful, beguiling creation filled with wonderfully elegant, pastoral poetry (‘I am gardening this forest with the cuckoos and the bees’) and flawless, emotive harmonies capable of sweeping you off your feet.

Regardless of the subject matter, however, each of the four tracks on this EP maintain their own unique charm as they enchant and captivate; the smooth resonance of Smith’s vocals soothes and comforts, whilst sweeping strings soar atmospherically, leaving you with a tingle down your spine and a warmth in your heart.

So; if you’re in Germany in April, you should most certainly make an effort to get out and witness this wonderfully enchanting project for yourselves. And, if you’re in London, don’t panic – Your Correspondent will be treating your ears soon with a  support slot for Thomas J Speight at The Enterprise on 6th March, as well as a very special date at The Union Chapel on the 22nd.

The EP will be launched in April, so watch this space! And, in the meantime, take a visit to Your Correspondent’s Facebook page for information about upcoming dates, and some beautiful snippets of their work.

Your Correspondent is:

Edwin Ireland – Cello
