Unsigned City: Liverpool

Promoting unsigned artists is something we at Gigslutz feel extremely passionate about, with our regular ‘Unsigned Act Of The Week’ and ‘Ones To Watch’ features, as well as a wealth of reviews and premieres. Celebrating new artists, or even people who’ve been making music for years but not got the recognition they deserve, is something we pride ourselves on and feel is an integral part of what the world of music should be about. We therefore thought it would be a great idea to focus on the array of unsigned artists in different cities around the country and spread the word about the huge amount of talent that is out there!

This week, it’s the turn of our new writer, Jake Marl, to select five artists from the exciting Liverpool scene…

THE RAGAMUFFINS:  The Ragamuffins are an infectiously melodic Indie-Pop band based on Merseyside. Their frenetic style is a tight mix of chiming guitars and chirpy pop. The band reached the final of Mersey SoundStation 2014 and have recently released their latest single ‘Taped Off The Radio’. Charming, with witty lyrics and an original Northern-pop sound that can’t fail to please your ears, Ragamuffins are making plenty of noise in Liverpool and will be making noise at a venue near you soon.

THE JACKOBINS:  The Jackobins are a rapidly growing alt-rock band from Liverpool. They’re all set to release debut EP Ghosts next month in a homecoming gig at East Village Arts Club,  which will mark the end of an already successful run of live dates in the UK for the band. Humming guitars and charismatic tones flow through title track ‘Ghosts’ which is the pick of the band’s releases to date. They’ve been banging on the door of Liverpool’s music scene over the last year or so, but in this EP I think they may have found the key. One to keep your eye on in the near future.

SCARLET: You can thank me for this one later. Scarlet, a Liverpool based Shoegaze-Pop band are one of my tips for the year ahead in Liverpool. Already making waves with a range of live shows in our city, including supporting The Struts and being booked to headline our impressive Magnet venue in a few weeks. Scarlet team moody, bass-led pop with charming vocals and lyrics so real you could bump into them on the street. Their songs have the perfect mix of gentle melodies and naughtier, dark riffs. Releasing demos that put other band’s singles to shame, the band are flying high, heading into 2015 with studio sessions and an exciting tour planned to wow your ears. Not liking Scarlet isn’t an option and I don’t know why you would want to anyway. Scarlet are the future.

THOM MORECROFT:  Adding some variation to the list is my solo pick, Thom Morecroft. He’s an extremely talented singer/songwriter based in Liverpool who continues to wow with his rasping, husky vocals and poetic lyrics that tell real-life stories from the heart. Thom is also a vary varied and impressive live performer and will be showcasing his live vocals at a gig with Beans On Toast & She Drew The Gun at our city’s Shipping Forecast venue in a few week’s time. His talent is showcased across a wide range of genres from Folk-Pop meets Jazz hit ‘Daisy’ to Pysch-Pop flowing emotive numbers such as ‘Help Me’. In additon to this, Thom has a new single out later this month titled ‘Up All Night’ and I have a feeling you’ll be doing just that listening to his growing list of tunes. Tom’s a humble and honest performer who deserves more credit for his music, so I hope you’ll enjoy listening as much as I do.

GO FIASCO: Go Fiasco have had a fantastic 2014 thus far. Releasing single ‘Heaven’ and playing plenty of live shows with potentially big connotations for the band, including supporting Craft Spells in Liverpool and playing gigs in London. ‘Heaven’ has recieved largely positive reviews since its release at a launch gig in Liverpool. ‘Heaven’ is an alternative burst, starting with stroking guitars and soft vocals that eventually merge with humming guitars and harsher bass and drums. Go Fiasco accompany Scarlet at The Magnet gig in Liverpool on November 28th in what is shaping up to be a massive night for independent music in our city. The band have been working hard in studio and have some exciting plans in the near future. Look out for Go Fiasco hitting your music scene soon. Get them in your ears. Get Them in your life. GO FIASCO.
