Big Time exclusive – DMA’s and Planet together: “It’s a project with no rules!”

DMA’s guitarist Johnny Took has spoken exclusively to Gigslutz and This Feeling about his new band Big Time – a duo with Johnny’s younger brother, PLANET singer Matty.

It was inevitable the brothers would get together to smash it in the studio eventually. Johnny reckons that people needing some positivity during lockdown meant the time was right to share the first tune combining their huge talents.

You can watch ‘It’s You’ EXCLUSIVELY here:

‘It’s You’ is a shimmering, psychedelic groove which shows their shared love of Ride. The tune hints at more greatness to come but, with PLANET and DMA’s so busy, Johnny warns it might be a little while before Big Time can make more anthems.

DMA’s release their third album ‘The Glow’ on July 10 and PLANET unleash their second EP ‘Maybe Someday’ on April 17.

Here’s what Johnny had to say on the music that bonds him at Matty, finding the time for Big Time and his hopes for the band…

What made you decide it’s the right time to make music together?

We’ve always played music together since we were young. We used to do it all the time, playing cover gigs around Sydney two to four times a week. However, since DMA’S and PLANET have been so busy over the last few years, we haven’t had the space. I guess with the lockdown with C-19, it felt like the right time, considering people are stuck at home looking for something new too.

How quickly did the sound of Big Time start to emerge?

I think we’re still working it out. We played a lot of country music together, but also have a stern love for guitars/pedals and noise, so I guess we try and blend it all.

Growing up together, how similar are your tastes?

We’re kinda into anything if it’s a good song. Over the past few years, I’ve definitely been getting deeper into electronic production, though – I guess it just extends from a love of sounds.

How well do you get on as brothers?

We’re thick as thieves x

Are you going to find the time for Big Time among PLANET and DMA’S commitments?

Probably not – but I think that’s OK. It’s that kind of project, no rules!

What achievement would count as Big Time making it big time?

Making a record that we’re both proud of, that represents us as brothers and best mates.
