ALBUM: The Harlots ‘Chinese Carpet Factory’

Rating:

If you like “Beatles infused, shoe gaze rock n roll”, you might want to wrap your ears around the sound of The Harlots. Their debut album, Chinese Carpet Factory, is home to a stellar set of anthemic, rolling rock tunes.

These four lads from London will have your feet shuffling and your hips twisting from the moment you press play. Their tracks are enthusiasm incarnate, and their sound has been refined with the help of producer Rory Attwell (Palma Violets and The Vaccines). The energy which flows from ‘You Got Me’, ‘The Colour & The Noise’ & ‘Gotta Get By’ is irrepressible. Each will quicken the pace of any slow-walker’s step.

Whilst every track is suitable for a hefty dance floor workout, ‘Work Work Work’ will improve the tired commute for those on a 9-5 – easing the aggro with cracking vocals and gloriously upbeat psych-style keyboard and guitar. The band even make way for chivalry on ‘Seen A Girl’ – a rock tune girls and the boys will have no trouble getting down to on a Saturday night.

There’s time to catch your breath during ‘Up Away’, with the stripped back vocals and acoustic guitar. Despite its slower pace, it still equals the sincerity and zest of the other nine songs on the record.

Ultimately, you need to chuck on your dancing shoes and be seduced by the sound of Chinese Carpet Factory. Get down to the contagious sound of The Harlots – you might need a hip replacement after all the twisting, but you’ll welcome the breather the anaesthetic brings!

Chinese Carpet Factory is out now.
