ALBUM: Seaside Sons – ‘Out Of Time’

Seaside Sons are a 4 piece Indie-rock band hailing from the Scottish coastal town of Ayr. With vocalist Jason Skimming leading the charge, Seaside Sons also feature Pav Cathcart (guitar), Craig McGinn (bass) and Campbell Sproat on drums. I caught the Sons towards the tail-end of last year when they supported The Moons at King Tut’s in Glasgow and on the night I was impressed enough to seek them out online and have been looking forward to getting my hands on an advance copy of their debut album Out Of Time ever since.

The 12 track album opens with the aptly titled ‘Out With The Tide’ and is followed up by ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’. Influences are apparent from the outset with the Stones and Oasis being drawn on throughout, though it is not until the third track – ‘Burn In The Sun’ – that the album really gets going. With the beating drums and Gallagher-esque riff, I am hooked from the outset and by the time front-man Skimming comes in singing “I wanna fly like an eagle, swim like a dolphin, float like a butterfly”, my blood is well and truly pumping.

Despite the ‘polished’ album cover (pun intended), the majority of the album captures the raw sound of the Seaside Sons that appealed to me at Tut’s. Title track ‘Out Of Time’ is another high point and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ is a real cracker and, as Skimming sings about a relationship of tension, it is easy to imagine this one being bellowed back at the band from their ever-increasing fan-base. Lead single ‘Roll On (Little Lady)’ is without a doubt the stand-out moment on the album that will light up any live venue. For me this is the moment when it all comes together for the Sons and, after numerous plays, is a track I have not tired of listening to. ‘Feel To Low’ reigns it back in before ‘Let Me Be’ picks it up again. With a distinctly Who/Doors feel to it, ‘Let Me Be’ is another highlight and I can’t help but love the powerful lyrics – “Just sit down and shut your mouth and just let me be”.

Finally, the in-your-face ‘Weekend Rockstar’ and the reflective ‘Miles Away’ bring the album to a close. All in, Out Of Time has a number of quality tracks that are ‘real growers’ and well worth checking out. Overall, a more than promising debut.

Check out the Seaside Sons on Facebook or if you happen to be in the Ayr area, get yourself along to the Market Inn on February 21st for the album launch.
