ALBUM: Turbowolf ‘Two Hands’

Rating:

It seems the recession somehow managed to affect the rock industry, with precious few rock bands emerging out of the UK for well over five years. Turbowolf, along with countless others including Marmozets, Slaves and Wolf Alice, however, are testament that this recovery is in full swing.

It’s fair to say that as excellent as their eponymously titled debut album was, Two Hands managed to reflect how the band have matured as songwriters. This additional strength has allowed them to vary their track styles, which only serves to give the album a well rounded feel. This being said, the album isn’t short of heavy ballsy riffs which have given Turbowolf their popularity. Tracks such as ‘Solid Gold’ and ‘Nine Lives’ are powerful songs, with still enough intricacy to be potential rock chart singles rather than just generic mosh fodder.

The variance the band have put into their album is hugely impressive, with traces of hard rock, punk and even traces of folk in certain parts. This diversity allows the band to flit between the genres, never staying in one place for too long. ‘Invisible Hand’ and ‘American Mirrors’ both have obvious influences from punk, although with the former bearing a similarity to the angrier side of Sum 41, whilst the latter sharing more in common with the hardcore group A.F.I. You have to give the boys credit, they continue to refuse to pigeon hole themselves to one genre. Highlights of the album include the belters ‘Nine Lives’ and ‘Good Hand’, not to mention the mammoth track, ‘Rabbit’s Foot’.

Two Hands has been several years in the waiting and the boys from Bristol have successfully delivered another solid, well thought out album, with great variance in the tracks. This being said, the band have managed to not compromise their trademark sound, with the ever present dirty clunking riffs that have been the foundation of their electric gigs and cult following.

Two Hands is out now via Spinefarm Records / Search And Destroy Records.
