Discovery of the Week: Broken Hands

Canterbury rockers Broken Hands are here to treat us with a brand new single, ‘Death Grip’ (no relation to the band). The stand-out guitar line is accompanied by even stronger vocals, reminiscent of early Editors, whilst the addition of heavy fuzz and aggression adds a unique edge. “You held me with your death grip, I’m moving out on a guilt trip” Dale Norton screams with the ferocity and angst of one with real emotions lining this song, not simply words on a page. Earth rattling bass and clattering cymbals reflects this erratic emotion and rhythm.

The video for ‘Death Grip’ is the first installment of a three part narrative series. As reverb-filled and fuzz-ridden guitars start up at the start of the track, the appearance of a crash landing with a confused and injured pilot come into sight. The frantic actions of the stranded protagonist, combined with blurred and hazy visuals really bring this track to life. The theme of flight and aviation is a consistent one on the band’s upcoming album and, if ‘Death Grip’ is anything to go by, the album should be pretty spectacular.

Broken Hands will be performing ‘Death Grip’ at their sold out show at London’s Electrowerkz tomorrow night as part of their Silver Landing Program concept; if you want to see Electrowerkz covered in foil accompanied by a light show that will blow your mind, I highly recommend doing all you can to procure a ticket.

‘Death Grip’ is out April 6th via So Recordings, but for a limited time is available for free download here.
