Discovery Of The Week: Chupa Cabra

With a name like Chupa Cabra, the last place you’d be expecting this three-piece garage-rock band to be from is North Wales. Who knew dark and damp Wales could summon connections to the warm and dry lands of Latin America. And maybe North Wales doesn’t immediately scream “awesome garage punk” but Haydn Hughes screams his best on new single ‘My Girl’.

The 3-piece have just released their debut single on Too Pure Singles Club for the whole wide world to hear. Too Pure releases singles and splits from some of the best artists around, working with bands from Pulled Apart By Horses and The Crookes to Menace Beach and Best Friends – an incredible track record.

‘My Girl’ is whirlpool of crunching guitars, I feel like my teeth are rubbing against gravel but it’s exhilarating. Hughes shouts “my girl is gonna split your brain in two!” in the vein of Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts, but with such a confused air of uninterested conviction that even Savage would envy. The wall of angry guitars and crashing drums never seems to cease, a copious “tinnitus-inducing” sound from these boys that can’t be ignored. Grab yourself a copy via Too Pure or pre-order from Rough Trade here.

My Girl is released via Too Pure Singles Club on the 22 January.

I’m Elli, 20 and live in Manchester. I like good music, gigs, rice krispies, 7” singles and puns. Alex G, Day Wave, Jaws, Talking Heads, Best Friends, Mac DeMarco, The Strokes, Parquet Courts and Tyler the Creator are pretty cool aren’t they. @cometobrazzill on twitter.
