Discovery of the Week: Green Buzzard

Enigmas and mysteries are a rarity in the modern day music industry. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and all the social media apps you’ve never even heard of, help the music fan and the press to find out everything they could possibly want to know about new bands. You can’t hear anything through the grapevine anymore, it’s retweeted onto your timeline without a thought. But there’s one band from Australia who weren’t having any of It.

Green Buzzard signed to Melbourne’s I Oh You records, with no live shows under their belt, no reviews, no songs, no nothing. Then just over a month ago, the band suddenly had a Facebook page, a Soundcloud, Spotify and a brand new video on YouTube for their debut single ‘Zoo Fly’. ‘Zoo Fly’ is two and a half minutes of unbelievably catchy and jangly guitar melodies and some seriously ’90s swagger (I hate the word, but it’s the only way to describe these best mates from Sydney). Trippy visuals and fairy lights in what appears to be a rather unusual house party is the perfect visual representation for Green Buzzard and their own unique flair for songwriting.

Despite it only being a month since their first ever release, Green Buzzard are already teasing us with a cover of Tobias Jesso Jr.’s ‘Hollywood’, a clashier Fountains of Wayne-esque style of Jesso Jr’s  sombre piano approach. The members of Green Buzzard have been in bands for years, but all together as Green Buzzard may be the perfect combination. If they keep creating killer tracks like ‘Zoo Fly’, they may just be one of the most exciting bands you’ll hear this year.

Green Buzzard release ‘Zoo Fly’ on a double a-side vinyl 7” on August 21 through I OH YOU Records.

I’m Elli, 20 and live in Manchester. I like good music, gigs, rice krispies, 7” singles and puns. Alex G, Day Wave, Jaws, Talking Heads, Best Friends, Mac DeMarco, The Strokes, Parquet Courts and Tyler the Creator are pretty cool aren’t they. @cometobrazzill on twitter.
