Discovery of the Week: Jasia

I was jealous of Jasia before I’d even heard how talented he was musically. He’d lived in Jamaica, the U.S and Australia all by the age of 18, whereas I’ve been in Manchester for my entire 18 years – I really should do some more travelling.

Apart from his worldly experience, 23 year old producer Jasia has been making waves with his distinctive sound, particularly around Australia, with Triple J awarding his track ‘Inverbatim’ as one of “five new genres created this year”. Jasia’s “orchestral dream-pop” is influenced by his classically trained background, as well as his experience of being in rock and pop bands whilst growing up. These different styles have all come together as one to hone his utterly unique sound as a solo artist.

New single ‘Safety’ is a real step up from Jasia’s previous work. Despite it simply being a 4 minute arrangement of sample drums and bass, it may as well be a teleportation device to a different plane. The repetitive motif of Jasia’s beautiful falsetto vocals is haunting but also heavenly, a sound to capture your attention but also send you sweetly off to sleep, perfectly relaxed.

The track is accompanied by a masterful, thought-provoking video directed by Julian Tynan. The classic feel of black and white depicting a story of boyhood and innocence and its progression into something more really encapsulates the mood and mystery of this orchestral and ambient track.

I’m Elli, 20 and live in Manchester. I like good music, gigs, rice krispies, 7” singles and puns. Alex G, Day Wave, Jaws, Talking Heads, Best Friends, Mac DeMarco, The Strokes, Parquet Courts and Tyler the Creator are pretty cool aren’t they. @cometobrazzill on twitter.
