Discovery of the Week: Reichenbach Falls

When Googling Reichenbach Falls, you are presented with the Swiss waterfalls (of course) and the popular Sherlock Holmes stories. Folk duo Reichenbach Falls have some work to do to get themselves to the top of that search but – after hearing their latest track – I wouldn’t put it past them. Previously described as “Belle and Sebastian with a hangover”, the Oxford duo are bringing their folk-pop goodness back into the spotlight with a brand new single, ‘English Rose’. After the success of debut album Reports of Snow (which we here at Gigslutz gave a glowing review),  Abe Davies and Jamie Cooper are hoping to do the same with the next stage of the band’s career.

Reichenbach Falls have retained all that was excellent about Reports of Snow and have totally stepped it up for their second album, The Traitor Shore. Davies’ vocals that are acclaimed in their unique blend of thick gruff, yet beautifully smooth, tones are even more mesmerising than before. On ‘English Rose’, Davies sings like a classic folk artist, embellishing each intonation, leaving the listener excited and straining to hear more. The track’s light-hearted melody with their signature wiry guitars reminds me of London folk wonders Matthew & The Atlas. If ‘English Rose’ is an accurate form of indication, The Traitor Shore is set to be another critically acclaimed album for the band.

‘English Rose’ is out now, and The Traitor Shore is due for release in September.
