Discovery of the Week: Whitney

Coming to my attention through my hometown’s biggest promoters, Whitney are something of an enigma. Formed from previous members of Smith Westerns, Max Kakacek and Julian Ehrlich, Whitney remain just as exciting and divisive as their previous project. However, now rather than “acid-washed pop” the band enhance their talent in more of a carefree country style. Yeah, country! But it’s good! Who would have known.

New single ‘Golden Days’ boasts some slick slide guitar and Ehrlich’s unexpectedly sweet and silky vocals. More upbeat and happy-go-lucky than previous single ‘No Woman’, “those golden days keep you hangin’ on” for a full-length album no doubt. Luckily both tracks are taken from Whitney’s debut album Light Upon The Lake. Whitney heads out on a US tour before then, and hits the UK again in June. Get ready.

Light Upon The Lake, the new album from Whitney, is out 3 June via Secretly Canadian.
