EP: Bob Vylan – ‘Vylan’

Dissenters unite: London rap-punk phenomenon Bob Vylan have released their debut EP VYLAN, and it’s a vicious, sacrilegious offering from these unholy characters. Comprised of rapper Bob and drummer Bobbie (the ‘ie’ is important) the pair have self-produced, recorded, mixed and mastered the five tracks on VYLAN, thus proving that the devil makes work for idle hands.

Their EP opens with ‘Church Of Vylan’, and a warped voice urging sinners from all backgrounds to congregate and commit anarchy under the Vylan banner. Thrashing guitar and manic drums permeate the track, leaving no room for a crisis in faith. It bleeds in to the brief  ‘Dirt Nap’, before the sedated ‘Dying Hell’ kicks in. It’s a trap-style take on purgatory – “you think you’re living, but you’re dying in hell, can’t you tell?” – that sees the pair slow down briefly before launching in to riotous penultimate track ‘Wake Up’.

Knockout drumming and more visceral guitar combine with Bob’s vocals on this track, urging listeners to open their eyes to the reality that their lives are controlled by people they’ve never met. ‘Dirt Nap (Reprise)’ closes the EP, and it’s a monstrous bookend on which the pair demand the attention and respect of all who dare to cross their path. Fuelled by a hatred of conformity and inequality, and a desire to see archaic barriers torn down; VYLAN is essential listening for those who don’t like being told what to do – unless it’s by Bob Vylan, that is.

Bob Vylan will be releasing a new track on Soundcloud every Sunday from 3rd December as part of their ‘Sunday Service’.

VYLAN is available on all digital platforms now. Follow Bob Vylan on Facebook for more updates.
