EP: Esther ‘Overthrone’

Rating:

Overthrone is Esther’s first EP, and you might notice something familiar about this 4- piece from the South Coast. They are half of Audioshock, formed back in 2012, who gained recognition from the likes of Radio 1 – they also supported Pendulum and Steve Aoki on tour throughout the UK and Europe.

But after a short break and the addition of two new members – Arron Moss and Ross Standen – they reformed under a new name and released their first single, ‘As One’, in June.

Fans will definitely rejoice as they seem to have kept snuggly within their safe haven of synth/guitar compositions. ‘As One’s’ eerie intro is no different when it smashes into a jaunty pop guitar riff, which you can’t help but mistake as a small nod to their Foals and Editors influence.

The album-title track juggernauts three significant tempo changes to intrigue and surprise fans. However, a playful synth and keyboard seems to resonate throughout songs like ‘Phosphenes’, which as the middle child shows an excellent example of the power of Jack’s vocal range.

With a loyal fan base behind them, they are gaining recognition once more and fans will be introduced to something slightly darker and heavier than their electronic/dub past. Evidence of this can be heard in ‘Reign’, that concludes with an almighty raucous sound proving they can end a noisy finale with conviction. They change styles in ‘Our Boats Will Moor Up Again’, as the intro pushes you along in a dream like hue and ends with a wild captivating sound. It is a perfect finish to a strong EP overall from a reinvented, self- funded band.

Overthrone is out now.
