EP: Paul Wilkes – ‘Patterns’

If you’re looking for that rare moment of tranquillity which is becoming increasingly hard to find, Paul Wilkes’ latest EP Patterns might bring you one step closer to it. Following on from his debut release, River Running With Me, Wilkes has composed a tender collection of tracks to sit deep within your soul.

Gently orchestrated with fluttering melodies, the title track creates a heavenly aura that’s almost not of this world. But Wilkes doesn’t do this through experimental psychedelia or musical extremes; instead it’s his sheer sense of simplicity and the delicate instrumentation of tracks like ‘Which Way Is Home?’ and ‘Proud of You’ which help you to escape the constant noise of your mind.

‘Catch You Whenever You Fall’ ends the EP on a slightly more upbeat tone, allowing Wilkes to demonstrate his true sense of musicianship. From his rustic vocals to the affectionate lyrics of “Who will catch you, catch you whenever you fall?”, all the emotion and creativity within truly makes this a striking work of art.

If you could be deafened by serenity then Patterns would do just that. Emotive, moving and expressive, Paul Wilkes reminds us of the beauty of simplicity and it won’t be forgotten.

Patterns is out 23 November, and you can catch Paul live at The Lantern Theatre in Liverpool on 25 November.
