EP REVIEW: Eliza And The Bear ‘Light It Up EP’

Let’s leave that godwaful, twee name to one side, and concentrate on the tuneage.  Despite the tropes and trappings of folk, this is as pop as they come. Their music is strangely familiar, already benefiting from an infinite number of side deals, airplay and champions.  It’s stomping, palatable folk that’s reminiscent of The Lumineers.  It’s poppy enough for daytime radio, but probably too harsh for a video game about wrestling.  There is a certain, discernable authenticity to it.  You can’t say that about Mumford And Sons. It’s pleasant enough, whistling in the background like a well-groomed bird. Where it falls down for me is that the lyrics don’t fit the music.  They have the borrowed clothes and clichés of folk music, but with the Panglossian sheen of Coldplay.  If that is your bag, there is plenty to enjoy here.  For those of us with settled minds, we should just continue to meditate.
