EP: Sweet White ‘Monet’

Rating:

Aberdeen band Sweet White‘s debut EP Monet shares its name with one of the world’s most revered French impressionist painters – but don’t let this intimidate you. If Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ and numerous other master-pieces are the inspiration behind their romantic, infectious indie funk sound, listener’s will enjoy the aural equivalent of watercolours on this record.

Opening track ‘Tides’ begins with lyrics “This shit happens all the time, dark days and long nights”. Whilst this sounds harsh on paper; the sweet Scottish-tinged vocals, and funky guitar & synths make this track an easy listen.

‘Good Time’ is an introverted male’s electronic dream – with its atmospheric riffs and smooth vocals pining “Baby you’re a good time, how much longer ’til you’ll be mine?” – whilst the eponymous ‘Monet’ slows down the tempo slightly. “If it’s illusion that you crave” this 5-piece can deliver it with their blend of bitter-sweet poppy lyrics and synthesisers.

‘Dazin” closes the EP and is a mix of sweet, yet melancholy sounding guitar. This is a track with unexpected emotional edge, thanks to lyrics like “When it’s dark and everything fades to blue, seems my mind can only find time for you”. However, this bubble of loneliness is eventually burst by a desolate, electric guitar ridden outro.

Hailing from Scotland, and using electronic elements in their music will naturally cause listeners to compare Sweet White to Chvrches, and they’d be fair (and complimentary) in doing so. Fans of the successfuly electronic trio will undoubtedly enjoy Sweet White’s tunes, so listen with an open mind and an open heart, and let their blend of indie funk take control of you.

Monet EP is out now via Spinnup.
