Adopted as a baby from Romania in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ben Rowntree’s stark narrative explores the trauma and shortcomings of the past while at the same time expressing optimism and hope for the future. ‘Youth’ has already drawn comparisons to Springsteen, The War on Drugs and The Killers, and they’re not out of place, it’s that good, yet Oh Maddie put an updated sonic spin on Americana that’s completely their own. Lyrically and performance-wise, Ben counts the likes of Cohen, Dylan and Cave as among his influences, and it don’t get much bigger or better than that. Ones to watch.
