North East funk and soul producer Alex Opal is back with a brand-new single, ‘Telling You Lies’, featuring vocals from underground soul sensation, Jam Jam.

Following the success of his debut release – ‘How It Feels’- last month and national airtime via the likes of Craig Charles and his 6 Music Funk & Soul Show – Alex Opal brings a taste of Northern Soul to his latest track, combining a classic groove and an addictive dance-driven pop sensibility.

Hailing from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Alex Opal is on a mission to breathe new life into the classic genre and make it relevant to a contemporary audience.

On ‘Telling you Lies’, Opal juxtaposes a fast tempo, syncopated grooves and a mesmerising bass line with lyrical themes of mistrust and desperation.

Listening to Opal’s music, you can hear his deep love and understanding of the soul music tradition and its power to ease the pain of heartbreak.

His lyrics are unashamedly honest, reflecting the harsh reality of modern life and relationships that we can all relate to.

The sweet yet powerful delivery of Jam Jam’s vocals brings these lyrics to life, adding a whole new layer to the music.

Speaking about the inspiration for his new single, Alex Opal said: “My first single ‘How It Feels’ was a mid-tempo, funky number, it set the scene and gave everyone a taste of what my music was all about. The new song is an all-out Northern Soul dance number. It has the groove and feel of a classic dance floor filler. My main aim was to write a song that inspired the listener to immediately leap to their feet and dance.”

“I love the heartbreak that Smokey Robinson’s sings about in ‘Tears of a Clown’. I tried to replicate that feel in this song.

“The song is about the emotional turbulence of being deceived and the overwhelming emotions we experience when love and hate become intertwined. Fortunately, there’s one antidote guaranteed to ease this feeling… dance!”

With a series of new singles and a collaborative EP on the way, along with a full UK tour to be announced soon, it’s an exciting time for Alex Opal and the UK soul scene at large.

Alex adds: “I’ve been extremely pleased with the reception to my music so far, and the fact that soul fans thinks it’s new and exciting.

“Rehearsals have begun for the first live show. So, expect an announcement in the coming months. There will also be a video for ‘Telling you Lies’, which we can’t wait to share with our new fanbase.”
