GIG SLUTZ REVIEW: LEAZES HIT NEW HEIGHTS WITH ‘I’VE BEEN WAITING’ – A HOMETOWN ANTHEM FROM NEWCASTLE’S FASTEST-RISING INDIE BAND – 5/5

Newcastle’s Leazes have spent the last year quietly turning local buzz into something far bigger – and new single ‘I’ve Been Waiting’ feels like the sound of a band grabbing that moment with both hands.

Released this week, the track marks a clear turning point: bigger hooks, sharper songwriting, and a renewed sense of urgency from a band who know the crowds are getting larger and expectations are rising – and who sound more than ready for both.

Clocking in just over three minutes, I’ve Been Waiting is a barnstorming indie anthem packed with heart and momentum. The guitars soar, the chorus lands with instant familiarity, and the whole track carries that rare feeling of standing on the edge of something exciting, unsure what comes next but certain you’re ready for it.

A BAND FINDING THEIR MOMENT

There’s a noticeable shift in tone this time around. Where earlier songs often observed characters and situations from the outside, I’ve Been Waiting pulls listeners directly into the band’s world. It feels immediate, personal, and emotionally open – like the soundtrack to a year that suddenly sped up.

Frontman Joe King knows how much things have changed.

“It really has been an insane year for us, and we’re so grateful for all of it. After Sun’s Out started getting traction, opportunities started coming along that we were once only dreaming about.”

That momentum runs right through the track. It captures the strange mix of excitement, disbelief and determination that comes when the thing you’ve worked towards suddenly feels within reach.

“It felt like the right song for right now,” King adds. “It lets the listener feel part of the band.”

BIGGER ROOMS, SAME HEART

Guitarist Sam Dellow sees the track as proof the band have settled into who they are.

“Musically, we’ve got to a point where we feel like we’ve really found what the Leazes sound is,” he says. “We’re not changing what we do – we’re just tightening it up.”

And that tightening shows. The production feels confident and purposeful, the performances punch harder, but the band haven’t lost the warmth or openness that made people care in the first place. Live, Leazes still feel like your mates on stage – only now those mates are playing to festival crowds instead of half-empty rooms.

HOMETOWN THANK-YOU AT THINK TANK

Even as festival slots and bigger tours start to stack up, Leazes are heading back home for a special intimate headline show at Think Tank in Newcastle on Sunday 5 April – a chance for fans to catch them up close before the next leap forward.

With strong support from rising North East talents Katie Grace and Joe Bartley, the night promises to be both celebration and statement: a thank-you to the city that raised them and a marker of how far they’ve come.

Tickets are on sale now at £15 plus booking fee via Gigantic, and with momentum behind the band stronger than ever, it won’t stay intimate for long.

VERDICT

With I’ve Been Waiting, Leazes don’t shout about their arrival – they simply sound like a band who know exactly where they’re heading. Big choruses, real emotion and growing confidence combine to create their most complete and exciting release to date.

Rating: 5/5 – A huge hometown anthem from a band on the brink of something special.
