Gigslutz Previews: Fjordland Sound & Chartburst Present – Houdini Dax

This Friday (31/05) Houdini Dax, Classic Plastic, I Like The Go Go, and Normanton Street plus Mas Music (DJ) are performing live at The George Tavern in Shadwell at 8pm for £3. The East London boozer has played host to some legendary gigs in the past; including a set by Pete Doherty and up-and-coming London band Filthy Boy. Also, the club at the back of the venue was the location where Pulp’s Common People video was filmed.

This night sees the George stay along its indie roots and host Houdini Dax as headliners. The Dax are often hailed as one of Wales’s finest new bands and have a sound suggestive of The Kinks, The Beatles, Tame Impala, and Arctic Monkeys.

The 3-piece from Cardiff received fantastic support from the release of their first album and they’ve been spurred on to create a second.

Their soon-to-be released album is bound to create a stir. Charlotte Church has heard it and consequently snatched the band under her wing, to act as primary tour support.

This Friday sees them headline The George Tavern because as well as making great albums they are very, very, very good at doing that live music thing.

In support is a trio of Brighton-based bands: Classic Plastic, I Like The Go Go and Normanton Street.

The bands started gigging together just before and during The Great Escape Festival.

Wanting to use the festival as a means of transforming locations that are usually host to the mundane into vibrant music venues; they together transformed a coffee shop, a tailors, and a vintage clothing store into gig venues for the weekend.

Their activity, however, is not confined to The Great Escape. The bands are some of the busiest on the underground music scene and gig regularly whether it be at house parties or premier live music venues.

As for releases, Classic Plastic’s first single ‘Bucket and Spade Escapade’ has received praise from Tom Robinson on BBC 6 music, John Kennedy on XFM, and Adam Walton on BBC Radio Wales. The band whose sound conveys the best of 90s Britpop are putting touches to their hotly-anticipated debut E.P. and are due to go on a nationwide tour this summer.

In terms of importance, I Like the Go Go have been hailed as “Brighton’s garage-trash saviours”. Incredibly, seeing this two-piece reflects a band who look and sound like they haven’t let the last 30 years affect them. It’s as if they were frozen at some point in the 60s or early 70s and transported to 2013, with the power to thrill and entertain to a level similar that MC-5 or Iggy and The Stooges did.

As for diversity, Normanton Street tip the balance away from Rock giving Hip Hop, Jazz, RnB, and Soul a spin. Their songs have truly original melodies and raps that sink you into their world with hypnotic trip-hop style rhythms. They are about to become a feature on the national gig circuit, so catch them while you can.

The party will continue into the early hours with a set from MasMusic who’s performing her debut London gig after having a residency in Geneva. She mixes indie/alternative.

This is a night that can be witnessed for £2.
