Haim LIVE @ Brighton Dome, 7-3-14

‘It all started here’ says Este to the Brighton crowd at the Dome tonight, ‘we really wanted to play for you guys’.

Haim has embarked on a rapid upward trajectory since their Brighton debut at the Great Escape in 2012.  Back then, Este whipped her clothes off mid-set and had a quick snog with a random audience member. I’m sure many a fan on the front row is hoping for a repeat display tonight. I doubt she’d struggle for a willing volunteer.

The trio’s debut album ‘Days are Gone’ has frequently featured in the critics wash-up polls of 2013’s best picks. Selling over 35,000 copies in its first week, the slick record – nonchalantly straddling the rock and radio friendly sides of the fence – strode into the number one slot in the UK albums chart upon its release.

In a land of overproduction and auto tune it’s easy for a great album to fall down at the live hurdle. No such danger here: infectious melodies, powerful musicianship and raw femininity invade the stage in the shape of these three songrstresses as they open with ‘falling’.

The hints of greats gone by feature throughout the set; a touch of Stevie Nicks here and a little of The Eagles there, but it’s not without their own flavor of pop and R&B styling too. The sisters insist their influences are more current than any 70s hero, tipping their caps to the likes of Destiny’s Child, Jesse Ware and Mariah Carey. Either way, you’ll find yourself singing and dancing along to many a hook on the way home. ‘Forever’ and ‘The Wire’ stand out especially, and as each begins tonight the audience erupts at the first note of recognition.

The visual doesn’t’ disappoint either. Haim are just so watchable, each member bringing their own unique flair to the performance: Danielle with her rock chick swagger, Este with that gurn face and Alana…well, leg, simply lots and lots of leg. At the risk of sounding like my mother, I’m not sure that little piece of material constitutes a pair of shorts.

‘Nearly there’ hot pants aside, you should try and catch Haim live in the UK whilst you can. A hike up to Sheffield and then Glasgow follow next week, before the ladies hit the festival circuit at Latitude and T in the Park amongst others. You’d be a fool to miss it.
