The Harrowbrooks LIVE @ Pi Bar, Leicester 13/11/14

Rating:

Found 5 minutes from the middle of Leicester centre is Pi Bar, a relatively indie bar which also hosts live music. Top of the bill this week were local band The Harrowbrooks. Having played both Osfest and Tramlines festival in the summer, they returned to Leicester for a highly anticipated homecoming gig.

Three support acts took to the stage and it was Ibisco who opened the night. Playing their first ever gig they surprised the whole crowd and didn’t let themselves down. Their catchy football-like chant, ‘IBISCO IBASCO, IBISCO CATALONIA’ got the crowd going from the start to finish. ‘Funhouse’ was the penultimate song of their set and was arguably one of the best performed songs of the night. The young band lived up to the fact that Leicester is churning out some class new bands at the minute.

Next up on the bill were another Leicester band – Suicide Bee’s. Having supported The Harrowbrooks before it’s clear that they’re highly rated by the headliners. They played a half an hour set and played it quite well I must admit. Their song ‘Force of Nature’ was the highlight of the bands set. The lead singer’s voice was similar to Damon Albarn’s in his Britpop era and that definitely isn’t a criticism.

The main support slot was held by the only band who didn’t hail from Leicester, this was of course Manchester band – The Marivaux. From start to finish these rocked out and the lead guitarist was on top form. The singer’s indie voice complemented everything else perfectly. They were the only signed band playing tonight and you could tell why… I’m sure that I’ll be going to see these again.

Rounding of the night was the self-proclaimed ‘rock n roll’ band The Harrowbrooks. I’d heard some raving reviews about these and their songs on souncloud all sounded very good, so I expected quite a lot of them – and yes, they did live up to my expectations. They played a lot of their own songs – ‘D’ya Wanna Play The Game’ being the standout for me. The voice of the lead singer did give off a rock n roll vibe and just like The Marivaux, the lead guitar was astonishingly good. They finished on a cover of Oasis’ famous song, ‘Columbia’, which the crowd absolutely loved.

There wasn’t a lot of people at the gig and you could tell that The Harrowbrooks aren’t there yet but they’re close. Maybe in a few months they could come back to Pi and pack it out… Who knows? But one thing is clear, Leicester is producing a lot of top quality music.
