INTERVIEW: Walk The Moon

Walk The Moon are an American indie rock band based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lead singer Nicholas Petricca created the band in 2008 and went through several band member changes before finally coming together with current members Kevin Ray, Sean Waugaman, and Eli Maiman in 2010.

How do you guys feel about releasing your upcoming album, Talking Is Hard, in the UK?

We are beyond excited to be releasing Talking Is Hard here in the UK. We have been working on this record for so long, and now we get to put it out in the world and let it walk on its own. It also means we will get the opportunity to come back and tour more in the UK, which is always a highlight of each record.

Did you enjoy touring with You Me At Six and All Time Low? What was the reception like to your set?

You Me At Six and All Time Low are some of the nicest, accommodating, and strikingly handsome people we’ve ever shared the road with. Even though the tour was only a few shows, it feels like we’ve known these guys for years. The audiences here are fantastic too, jumping and singing along to every song. I feel like everyone out there is up for anything.

Are you planning on playing any music festivals over here in the summer?

To be honest, we haven’t a clue if we will be playing any festivals here this summer, but, we hope so! I hear the UK festival crowds are crazy, and I can’t wait to experience it first-hand.

From everywhere you’ve toured thus far, do you have a favorite city that you’ve played? Or any interesting anecdotes?

I don’t like to play favorites with cities, mainly because every one is awesome in their own way. Buuuuuut, we have had some crazy shows in Glasgow. Maybe it is the crisp, Scottish air, but from the moment we step on stage, the audience doesn’t stop moving to the music!

Are there any bands or artists in particular that you love listening to at the moment? Any UU acts you’ve discovered whilst you’ve been over here?

I’ve really been digging the Glass Animals record. It’s so dreamy and the writing is really unique. And Eli still can’t stop bumping 1989, but that’s a given.

Which artists would you say have inspired you? Do you have any dream collaborations with others?

“There are so, so, so many, but the main one has to be Talking Heads. They are such a huge influence on the style, sound and writing of Walk the Moon. They bring the quirky as well as the smart/nerdy, and that fits our personalities perfectly. It’s not too nuts to dream of a collab with them, or at least, David Byrne. We have been known to cover Talking Heads on multiple occasions and have heard a rumor that Byrne is aware of us doing so. Life would never be the same if met him.

What can fans expect from a Walk The Moon headline set?

Fans can expect to sing and dance their hearts out and not stop moving their feet until long after the music stops. For anyone who is unfamiliar or has just recently discovered us, you are free to leave all your worries at the door and be a part of an experience that encourages every person in the room to be themselves. We hope that everyone leaves a Walk The Moon show feeling like they were an integral part of what made the show a success.

Finally, what does the future hold for you?

We are always excited about the future. We have already been to so many amazing places and met so many awesome people. As long as we get to keep doing this for a living, we will be very happy. Now that Talking Is Hard is out in the world, we plan to follow it wherever it goes and play shows to support it. I think the best part about this whole journey is getting to see the effect of a record in person, and that happens at a show. See you out there!”

Talking Is Hard is released on 18th May via RCA Records.
