Introducing Interview: HOMES

Welsh band HOMES formed in Cardiff last year, and have since garnered support from the likes of BBC Wales and Buzz Magazine. Now ready to take the rest of the UK (and beyond!) by storm, the band have shared brand new single, ‘Black Gold’. Filled with fuzzy riffs, catchy hooks and smooth, languid vocals, reminiscent of the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, it’s a catchy slice of indie-pop.

We caught up with HOMES to find out more…

Hi HOMES! Please introduce yourself and your role in the band.
My name’s Dylan and I’m the singer and songwriter for the band. HOMES begun its life out of the ashes of a previous jazz-rock experiment called karedig, which is semi-translation of the word niceness in Welsh. The band lasted a year and before I knew it. a heavier reincarnation was starting to be jammed by new members. We were always rehearsing in houses and liked calling it homes with the Mexican pronunciation so it stuck… As in “what’s up homes”?

How would you describe your sound?
We’ve been told we sound a bit like White Denim meets Spencer Davies Group and Tame Impala. But I’d prefer to let the readers of Gigslutz decide…

Have you been performing as a band for a long time?
Under different guises yes, for quite a while, but as HOMES about a year.

What’s your songwriting process like?
It can vary, but without sounding too corny I grew up in the Cambrian Mountains and once in a while I like to go up there and take a bashed up motorbike, a guitar and a notepad and see what I can come up with. Nice not having anyone around for hundreds of miles but rolling hills and barren fields can be inspiring.

What’s your single ‘Black Gold’ all about?
It’s about the paradoxes of being a young musician… Make of that what you will.

The video looks like a lot of fun! Was it fun to make?
Yes, it was loads of fun to make! But it was bloody freezing as it was filmed at the start of April during an Atlantic storm – the seas were rough and the wind was howling. We were trying to make it look like an off season British seaside holiday, which I’d like to think we managed to nail.

What’s the next step for HOMES?
More singles, more videos, an EP, gigs and a tour in the next few months.

Have you got any gigs or festivals in the pipeline?
All TBC.

Huge thanks to HOMES for answering our questions!

‘Black Gold’, the new single from HOMES, is out now.
