Introducing Interview: Two Penny Blue

London-based trio Two Penny Blue have previously charmed our ears with the immensely catchy ‘Gypsy’ and are now back with another twinkling offering, ‘Lament’.

Keen to gig as much as possible and continuing to spread their joyous, folk-tinged sound, Two Penny Blue sat down with us for a bit of a chat…

Hi, welcome to Gigslutz! Can you tell us a little bit about Two Penny Blue?
Sean: We’re a new young London based trio. We can be found gigging around London all year round and we are currently embarking on our great recording quest for our debut album.

How did you all initially meet and start playing music together?
Will: I crashed Tom’s party uninvited and about a year later asked him round for jam and things just went from there.
Sean: I met Tom at uni where we just hit it off, in every single way.
Tom: We all came together to do a one night only gig.

What would say it is that makes you stand out from other bands these days?
Tom: Just a general love!

We’re loving the new single ‘Lament – what’s it all about?
Tom: ‘Lament’ is an atheist perspective of the afterlife seeing the beauty of nothingness. The inspiration for writing the track was witnessing a motorcycle crash when I was younger and imagining what was going through the driver’s head.

How do you find being based in London? Do you go to see lots of live music?
Will: Probably not as much as I should, there’s a certain element of taking it for granted but it’s nice to know on any given night there’s sure to be someone worth seeing playing not too far away.
Tom: It’s nice being near the Queen. She gets me through hard times.

You seem to put a lot of energy into everything you do, what can we expect from your live shows?
Tom: I enjoy the boogie!
Will: Lots and lots of Pro-Plus…
Sean: Energy, finance, prospects, future… Two Penny Blue.

And what’s been your favourite live gig to date?
Will: Supporting ‘The Dirty Strangers’ at the Dublin Castle was probably our favourite. However, we are also fond of our local pub, The Ram, in Hammersmith. We like to test out our new tracks there.

As we’re a new music focused site, are there any other new/upcoming bands or artists you’d suggest we check out?
Tom: The Big Moon, King Nun and The Ketonas are all worth checking out.
Will: The Worldwide Welshman.
Sean: Sero.

And can you describe your sound in three words… ?
Tom: Exciting, Playful and Quirky.

Finally, what does the rest of 2017 have in store for Two Penny Blue?
We’re pretty much fully focused on our debut album which will be out this Autumn, but as sure as there’s paper in my printer you’ll see us touring the UK next summer.

Huge thanks for answering our questions!

‘Lament’, the new single from Two Penny Blue, is out now.
