INTRODUCING: The Turning

The Turning hold a badge of identity with their sharp wardrobe and even sharper tunes. Formed in early 2013, it hasn’t taken long for the band to gain a hard working reputation, which is expressed through their constant writing, gigging and promotion of their music. Over the past year, The Turning have been developing their very own hybrid style incorporating separate influences, crowd reaction from gigs gone by and a clear vision of where they want to go. This has seen their music mutate, morphing into 2 minute injections of lively sounds. Here at Gigslutz we have picked three of our favourite Turning tunes, to introduce you to this very exciting, up and coming band:

I Don’t Wanna Do That:

After supporting their good friends The Strypes on their UK tour early last year, The Turning have been able to extend their fan base extensively. This has enabled them to fund a 9-track mini album through an IndieGoGo campaign. Settle For That – released in October 2014 – featured a multitude of tunes written by the band themselves, as well as covers including ‘Le Responsable’, originally be Jaques Dutronc. ‘I Don’t Wanna Do That’ includes inspired, observational lyrics in language that this generation would find difficult not to understand. It’s effortlessly clever, without the strain of trying too hard. The difference is polaric from many other young bands that have the passion, but lack the mature execution.

Stand Clear Of My Mind:

In the last 18 months, the band have been growing in popularity and have begun to sell out multiple venues across the UK/ Ireland, including Camden Barfly and The Leadmill in Sheffield. The Turning are very much gig savvy. There is no doubt that they understand what they’re audience is expecting to see when they play live and are able to deliver it every single time without fail.  The allure of their clear enjoyment on stage is overwhelming, engaging the audience even if they weren’t interested in the first place.  Most evidently, ‘Stand Clear of My Mind’ is one of the songs that everyone knows the words to; it is a true asset to their live set.

Magazine Street:

The first original composition from The Turning came in the form of ‘Magazine Street’. Written on the day of their first meeting, it is named after a street in Derry where lead singer Luke McLaughlin hails from. David Bardon (Lead Guitar), Louis Gilbert (Bass), Ruben Kenton-Harris (Drums) are from West London and came together with McLaughlin through their mutual manager. It’s a song about misinterpreted perceptions which has proven to become one of their lost loved tunes.
