Jake Bugg LIVE @ Summer Sonic Extra Show, Toyko Japan

Jake Bugg had his first proper gig in Japan last week.  Following Summer Sonic, one of the biggest music festival Jake played as a band in Tokyo, Osaka with his “summer sonic extra show”. A Japanese audience could see proper performance finally!

Surprisingly the 1700ish capacity venue was not sold out. It appears Jake hasn’t quite hit the heights of fame in Japan as he has in the UK just yet. Universal Japan released the debut album in Jan 2013, almost 3 months after UK release and the post festival comedowns may have contributed to the smaller than expected attendance.

Even with many music being exhausted from the festival in massive heat (over 35℃!), it was a nice sized crowd. Jake barely talked, only few words to introduce songs then song after song with minimal gaps as usual. The songs were fluent enough to keep the audience completely riveted… The audience might have looked cool and quiet but people were definitely big in enthusiasm and paid close attention to Jake’s intricate playing.

He looked a little nervous sometimes and when showed a shy smile to when the cheers came from the girls. The boyish sheepiness was soon replaced when he started singing, changing to a very confident mature man with his eyes sparkling pure and straight. When he looks at audience, that rights are like a shooting arrow to uncover guilty feeling in adult minds. The adult who try to live in a rational way and resignation about the way of the world, tell a lie and deception in necessary…

He played 4 new songs; all of them are phenomenal with the highlight of the hour long set for me being ‘Broken’. His voice spread across the entire venue and made me almost cry.

A captivating show, I can’t wait for album number 2.
