JAWS LIVE @ The Institute, Birmingham 19.04.14

Birmingham band JAWS have progressed immensely since supporting bands including Peace and Swim Deep. On Saturday night they returned home, and it seemed that they bought their entire following to their sold out show at The Institute.

The antics began with JUICE, another Birmingham based band who have recently been climbing the popularity ladder, receiving a fair bit of attention from the Brummy music scene. Next up was Brighton’s The Magic Gang, who played a short set before making room for the main support act of the night. DUMB seemed to force the crowd in to a different frame of mind – from their set onward the atmosphere was wild. They’re definitely a band to look out for.

JAWS’ performance was highly anticipated throughout the night and the band were welcomed to the stage with a chorus of ‘We want JAWS’ booming from the crowd. Opening with their new track ‘Time’ had the crowds’ attention from the off, and the mixture of their older material from the ‘Milkshake-EP’ and a few new songs such as ‘Be Slowly’ and ‘Think Too Much, Feel Too Little’ created a sort of nostalgic hysteria within the crowd.

The maturity the band has gained since starting out was certainly noticeable on the night, while the music was tighter than ever and the stage presence the boys held was incredible. ‘Surround You’ left the crowd unsatisfied as JAWS departed the stage, and instantly screaming for more. The set ended with an encore of ‘Stay In’ and ‘Gold’; two fan favourites which undoubtedly got the loudest cheer of the night, as well as having the entire room dancing. (Including the lads from Swim Deep and Wolf Alice.)

JAWS have come along way in a small space of time and it’s doubtful they’ll be leaving the limelight any time soon, especially with the upcoming release of their new album, which is due this summer.
