WATCH: Dear Reader – ‘I Know You Can Hear It’

South African musician Cherilyn MacNeil, aka Dear Reader, has shared new track taken from her first album in four years, Day Fever.

‘I Know You Can Hear It’ is unlike anything else she’s released before. This track is filled with orchestral dreamy pop and her vocals are vaguely reminiscent of Kate Bush.

Recorded in San Francisco, 5,000 miles away from her home in Berlin, ‘I Know You Can Hear It’ is raw and delicate, which is fitting for the dark themes on her upcoming album. Dear Reader worked with John Vanderslice and recorded the album straight to tape which meant accepting a lot of the imperfections that can’t be digitally corrected. This makes ‘I Know You Can Hear It’ a wonderfully honest song that encompasses the same intimacy that live music can offer. This style of recording suits the song’s theme perfectly.

The video was directed by Annikki Heinemann who said “Dear Reader’s song deals with the theme of death, so we decided to tell the story of a young man who has died, and his transition into the next realm.”
